US Department of Transportation guidelines

• Under DOT standards, CDL holders must have 20/40 correctable vision in each eye with glasses or contact lenses.
• Diabetes is permitted if it is controlled with diet or oral medications, but drivers should not be on needle-injected insulin.
• Blood pressure must be under 160/100, and prescription medication is allowed to manage it.
• The use of Schedule 1 drugs, amphetamines, narcotics, or any other habit-forming drugs is prohibited.
• Drivers with any cardiovascular conditions like cardiac insufficiency, congestive cardiac failure, or any other cardiovascular diseases must have an exam by a medical examiner, including a stress test that was done within the last 12 months.
• Clearance may also be required for drivers with recent back injuries, recent major surgery, hernias, workers’ compensation claims, or sleep apnea. 

CDL drivers

The CDL drivers, considered instrumental in DOT drug screening are also made to undergo random drug screens themselves at periodic and regular intervals, which is an obligation for maintaining their license.
